China has called for closer economic cooperation among Asia-Pacific economies as officials meet to discuss the challenges facing the global economy. Speaking at the APEC Finance Ministers’ meeting in Hong Kong on October 20, Finance Minister Lan Foan described the forum as an important engine of growth and urged members to strengthen coordination.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum includes 21 economies, among them China, the United States, Japan and Russia. Its members have different political systems and economic priorities, but they share an interest in trade, investment and regional stability. The forum provides a place for officials to discuss common challenges even when governments disagree on other issues.
Lan highlighted the importance of cooperation in areas including artificial intelligence, the digital economy and green development. These sectors are shaping investment decisions across the world. Governments are seeking ways to use new technology to improve productivity while also managing energy demand, environmental pressures and the changing needs of workers.
Artificial intelligence is attracting particular attention because it may affect many industries, from manufacturing and transport to finance and healthcare. However, investment in the technology also raises questions about regulation, data security and the distribution of economic benefits. Cooperation between economies could help establish shared approaches, although national interests may limit how far governments are willing to align their policies.
Green development is another priority. Investment in cleaner energy, efficient transport and new industrial systems may create business opportunities, but it also requires financing and long-term planning. Countries face different starting points and may disagree over how quickly they should change their energy systems.
China’s call comes at a time of uncertainty in global trade. Political tensions, shifting supply chains and uneven demand have made companies more cautious about investment. Stronger cooperation could help reduce some barriers and create more predictable conditions for cross-border business.
Lan also reaffirmed China’s commitment to economic reform but did not provide detailed new measures at the meeting. Investors will look for practical steps that affect market access, business confidence and the ability of domestic firms to grow.
The meeting highlights the importance of dialogue in a region that plays a central role in global manufacturing and trade. APEC cannot resolve every disagreement among its members, but it can provide a forum for discussing shared economic concerns.
The outcome will depend on whether the broad calls for cooperation lead to concrete commitments. Businesses will be watching for signs that governments can turn discussion into policies that support investment, innovation and more stable regional growth.
